What is Coumadin?

Coumadin, also known as Warfarin, is an anticoagulant medication. An anticoagulant is something that prevents your blood from forming clots in your arteries or veins.

If you have a blood clot an anticoagulant medication can help prevent a piece of the clot from breaking off and traveling to other parts of your body. An anticoagulant can also prevent the clot from getting bigger

How do I know the medication is working?

There are two types of blood tests that tests for clotting and help to determine the effectiveness of Coumadin
  • PT Test, or Protime test
  • INR test
These tests also help to determine the appropriate dosage of Coumadin to keep a balance in your body between bleeding and clotting.
