  Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE)

What is a TEE ?

A TEE is a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart and blood vessels. TEE is a type of echocardiogram. An echocardiogram gives information about the function of the chambers and valves of the heart as well as details of the hearts size and shape.

How does the TEE differ from a traditional Echo?

A traditional Echo is done by placing a device, transducer, on the front of the chest and using ultrasound beam which travels through the chest to the heart. A TEE allows the transducer to be placed in the esophagus. The esophagus sits behind the heart in the chest cavity and thus the echo beam is much closer to the heart giving a more clear image.

Reason for TEE

This test can be used as a diagnostic aid by your doctor in determining

  • the size and shape of your heart
  • the function of the chambers and valves
  • areas of poor blood flow
  • areas where heart has difficulty contracting
  • prior injury to the heart
